Best Formula For Babies

When breastfeeding isn’t an option for you, or you need to supplement your breast milk with something extra, the formula options may be overwhelming. I have searched high and low for the best formula for babies and laid out my findings for you here. You may end up trying a couple different types before you find your baby’s favorite but this list should be a great starting point.

Best Overall

Product: Similac Pro-Advance

Available Forms: Powder & Ready to Feed

Recommended Age for Use: 0-12 months

Rainbow Mommy Rating: 5/5

Amazon Customer Rating: 4.3/5

Average price per container: $29 for 23.2oz

Where to but it: Similac Pro-Advance on Amazon.com

What’s Great About This Formula: This formula is a great option if your baby doesn’t have any special dietary needs. It’s a cows-milk based formula and contains 2’-FL HMO (Human Milk Oligosaccharide), which helps your baby’s immune system develop. It contains everything your baby needs nutritionally and is about as close to breast milk as it gets.

What’s Not So Great About This Formula: This formula tends to be a little more expensive than other non-specialty formulas and if your baby has a dairy sensitivity or reflux, you will want to look for a different option.

Best For Acid Reflux

Product: Enfamil A.R.

Available Forms: Powder & Ready to Feed

Recommended Age for Use: 0-12 months

Rainbow Mommy Rating: 5/5

Amazon Customer Rating: 4.4/5

Average price per container: $27 for 21.5oz

Where to but it: Enfamil A.R. on Amazon.com

What’s Great About This Formula: This formula is great for babies who suffer from acid reflux and it was ultimately the winner for my son. It’s thickened to help your baby keep it down easier and, unlike the common practice of adding cereal to milk, it still offers the right balance of nutrients for your baby. We noticed a huge difference in the frequency and volume of my son’s spit up when we made the switch.

What’s Not So Great About This Formula: With the extra thickness of the formula, it can require some adjustments with the bottles you are using. We needed to move from a level 1 nipple to a level 3 nipple (we use Dr. Brown’s bottles) and the powder is sometimes difficult to mix.

Best Soy

Product: Gerber Good Start Soy

Available Forms: Powder, Ready to Feed, & Concentrated Liquid

Recommended Age for Use: 0-12 months

Rainbow Mommy Rating: 4/5

Amazon Customer Rating: 4.4/5

Average price per container: $26 for 25.7oz

Where to but it: Gerber Good Start Soy on Amazon.com

What’s Great About This Formula: If your baby has true milk sensitivity or lactose intolerance then this is a great option. It is soy based instead of cow’s milk based so it should help relieve gas and fussiness caused by an upset tummy. It has everything needed to still provide the appropriate nutrition for your baby.

What’s Not So Great About This Formula: If your baby doesn’t have problems digesting milk, this formula most likely won’t help with gas or fussiness. It also contains more sugars than normal formula to hide the flavor of the soy.

Best Organic

Product: Happy Baby Organic

Available Forms: Powder

Recommended Age for Use: 0-12 months

Rainbow Mommy Rating: 4/5

Amazon Customer Rating: 4.3/5

Average price per container: $27 for 21oz

Where to but it: Happy Baby Organic on Amazon.com

What’s Great About This Formula: This formula is great if you are looking for an organic option for your baby. It is reasonably priced compared to other formula options. It is designed to mimic breast milk and even contains prebiotics similar to those in breast milk.

What’s Not So Great About This Formula: Some moms complained that this formula caused constipation or other tummy issues for their babies.

Best For Preemies

Product: Similac Neosure

Available Forms: Powder & Ready to Feed

Recommended Age for Use: 0-12 months

Rainbow Mommy Rating: 5/5

Amazon Customer Rating: 4.5/5

Average price per container: $18 for 13.1oz

Where to but it: Similac Expert Care Neosure on Amazon.com

What’s Great About This Formula: This formula has ore calories per ounce than a normal formula, so it will help your preemie gain weight more quickly. Many hospitals trust this formula for preemies in the NICU and moms are extremely happy with the weight gain results they get.

What’s Not So Great About This Formula: Some moms complained that this formula caused gas and constipation, especially in babies with a lactose sensitivity.

You Have Formula, Now What?

For bottles made in seconds at exactly the right temperature, try the Baby Brezza. This is a lifesaver for me, especially in the middle of the night when the baby is crying and I need to take care of him quickly. It’s also great for when other people help feed the baby because you can keep it set to the size you need and all they have to do is press a button.

Many babies prefer warm milk to room temperature milk, but bottle warmers can be a hassle and take extra time. The Baby Brezza eliminates all those problems, just keep it filled with water and the formula of your choice.
